The New Inspired By the Old

The Mountain Pine Beetle has decimated the Lodge Pole forests of the Rocky Mountains from Canada to New Mexico. Millions of trees have turned from green to red washing the mountains in a rusty hue. The beetle bores under the bark of trees, eating, killing and secreting an enzyme that turns the once pale sapwood a bluish tint. The blue streaked wood is easily identifiable as "Beetle Kill" and while blue pine serves well as a decorative accessory, as an mainstay it gets old fast. Unfortunately, there are millions of dead pines that have this blue streaked wood. Presently, these dead pines are being harvested and chipped. These chips then go to landfills that are quickly reaching their capacity. Recently, there have been some innovative groups that will use this wood for power and heat. There are also the artisans who use the natural coloration of the wood to create beautiful works. Then there is Vintage Woods.

Vintage Woods sees the Beetle Kill epidemic as an opportunity to create products that are versatile, environmentally responsible and beautiful. With the help of local Colorado sawmills and a proprietary aging method, Vintage Woods creates dimensional lumber that has the natural look of weathered time in a variety of hues and surface treatments. This lumber is ideal, used inside or outside as siding, facia, soffit, decking and trim. Vintage Woods has created the process to transform the telltale "blue streaks" of beetle kill pine into a building material with beauty and character that rivals reclaimed barn-wood or Wyoming snow fence. The greatest benefits are reuse on a scale that can make a difference and the economy of using new, straight, uniform lumber in a variety of beautiful hues.
